Q&A: Maddy Davis Releases “Can’t Do This Alone”

Maddy Davis forfeits her battle with homesickness on her latest track "Can't Do This Alone.” On her latest release, the multifaceted artist sheds layers of emotion through a playful sounding production. Hailing from the suburbs of New Jersey, 20-year-old Maddy Davis is unassuming. With her french braids, cut off jeans, oversized band tee, and giggling stage banter, Davis’ sound takes listeners by surprise. Mixing together her raspy texture, glistening harmonies create a buttery soundscape that craft that relatable coming of age stories.

As a producer, songwriter and vocalist Davis controls her sound from ideation to execution with complete control of the agency. Using her experience of growing up as a kid from the burbs with New York City feeling so close but still out of reach, Maddy Davis creates songs that relate to everyone’s 20 somethings: dreaming big, moving fast, and not letting anyone tell you otherwise. In a brief Q&A with Listen Mag, Maddy opens up about upcoming plans and the creative process behind her recent single, “Can’t Do This Alone.”

On what inspired her single:

I wrote “Can’t Do This Alone” during a time in my life when I felt like I was having to grow up too fast. At the time, I was leaving the place where I spent my entire childhood, and with that, leaving behind the people who made it home. This song came from a place of wishing I could be back in my mom’s house in the suburbs without anything to really worry about. “Can’t Do This Alone” is one of the closest songs to my heart that I’ve written so I’m super excited to finally share it with people!

Do you feel that you’ve grown sonically since your past release last year? What type of sound can fans expect on your upcoming EP or album?

Absolutely. I’ve always produced and written all of my songs, so I find that growth comes naturally with the process of developing my skills in both. I have been writing my entire life, but every song I write allows me to learn so much more about songwriting and about my own style of songwriting. As for producing, I’ve only been at it since I was about 17, so since then, I've already grown and improved so much. I'd definitely say the heart of my music has stayed the same since my Code Blue release, but a lot of the dynamics of my songs have changed and adjusted to what I feel like represents my sound more.

On possible live shows and plans for the future:

I do! I am in the process of booking a few Los Angeles shows for the next couple of months. I also have a show in New York in early April with a couple of other incredible female artists. Dates and details to come for all of these!
