TRACK BY TRACK: JVLY - inside weather
Welcome to Track by Track, where we give artists the chance to take fans through their latest project one song at a time. Today, JVLY details inside weather.
Australian singer-songwriter JVLY has released his dreamy sophomore EP, inside weather. Over the last few months, the rising artist has gifted us a collection of exceptional singles - “tacenda”, “me&her”, “monsoon” & “aporia,” and each song on the EP tells us one part of a bigger story. The entire project flows perfectly into one another, simulating a surreal, out of body experience; the type of project to listen to at night or to help you unwind.
JVLY explains he spent some time making sure each part worked together with a seamless flow, and he hopes that everyone will get the chance to listen to it from start to finish so that they really appreciate the story in its entirety.
moonpond:
The reason the intro to the album, ‘moonpond’, exists is actually because when I was playing live I would start my set off with ‘tacenda’ I felt people weren’t really paying attention til halfway through the song while they get their spot in the crowd sorted or whatever. I wanted to make something with attractive and curious sounds that would build into something really full on musically loud and then just completely cut out so they’d be ready for the ‘first song’. Then the further I got into making the piece of music the more I realised it would be the perfect way to start the record.
“tell me there’s a way, my love, to make your eyes see the things they won’t
tell me there’s a way, my love, to make your nerves feel the things they don’t” - probably two lines the central theme of the whole project could be reduced to.
tacenda:
tacenda was the first song to be written for the project. After a handful of releases prior, I can definitely say that this is the song where it clicked that I had found my sound. When I made this I knew what I wanted this JVLY project to be. It steered me in the direction of making this record.
me&her:
This is the only collaboration on the project. I sent Luca (DRKTMS) an instrumental I had made which he reworked and added a vocal concept. I took that, added some more synth work and wrote my vocals. After a few back and forth’s it was good to go. It’s up there with the more fun tracks. For the most part I’ve worked alone on my songs, so t’s weird collaborating on something as personal as that with someone on the other side of the world you have never actually met, but it definitely opens up doors to ideas you wouldn’t have thought of otherwise, so it’s really interesting to do that and see where it can take things.
aporia:
aporia was one of those ones that just happened. The verses you hear are the first ones I recorded when it was just some piano chords. It all came together really quickly which is pretty rare for me. This was a special one for sure, I was most satisfied finishing this.
potplants:
I started and finished this song in the 24 hours I had left before sending everything to Callan (cln) for mixing and mastering. I wanted to add another, brighter track. This one was inspired by tacenda and also artists like Tennyson. Keen to play it at shows!
monsoon:
monsoon comes from a blend of irony in the way that it’s a kind of a gloomy concept but it’s a funky sound and listening to a lot of 70s soul music like Roberta Flack and The Brothers Johnson. I wanted to make sure that anyone who can relate to the story knows that it’s really gonna be all good regardless. Artists like Still Woozy and Clairo definitely gave some inspiration for this one too in that sense.
ghostbones:
The one that nearly got away!! I was stuck on this song, it used to go for a lot longer and there was a lot of what i’d call dead space in it. I was so at a wall with it after trying to do all this crazy stuff musically, that I left it and wrote a bunch of others to try replace it. A few days before I turned everything in I revisited it and for some reason it was super clear that I just needed to trim the fat. Less is definitely more a lot of the time I learnt. The closing track, it’s got a final feeling and it’s what the whole record amalgamates to.
