MUST LISTEN 030
Every week, we’ll be bringing you Must Listen: a series that's a compilation of rising artists along with songs that must be added to your everyday playlist. This week’s playlist consists of emerging acts like breathe., Leyya, and Luca Ferrand. Turn up, tune in, and tune out.
breathe. - “Home”
breathe. touches on loss, isolation, and connection in their haunting new single, “Home.” Made up of Sean Walker and Andrew Grant, the Australian duo called upon friends in as many as 17 countries to film fleeting moments of what home meant to them for their music video, creating unity during a period of intense separation. It’s the heart-wrenching musical and cinematic experience that sets breathe. apart from the masses.
Leyya - “The Paper”
After a couple of years apart working on their own artistic ventures, Sophie Lindinger and Marco Kleebaur rejoin forces as indie-pop duo, Leyya for their new single, “The Paper.” The lyrics are a playful and frank conversation about their state of mind during a year that’s been abnormal for everyone. It’s carefree, catchy, and a long-awaited reintroduction to the Austrian two-piece.
Luca Ferrand - “Love You Back ft. Aduna”
With only a couple of songs under his belt, Mexico City’s Luca Ferrand has already established a sound of his own. “Love You Back” stays true to his funky and R&B driven tracks, while Aduna’s vocals are the cherry on top to the smooth and addictive single. It’s an impressive addition to Ferrand’s growing discography, and hints at what’s more to come.
cehryl - “Superbloom”
One minute and 37 seconds is plenty of time for cehryl to deliver her next bittersweet anthem. “Superbloom” is just the most recent of the Hong Kong singer’s 2020 singles, following the release of her self-produced debut album, Slow Motion, in 2019. The song compares the lifespan of a relationship to that of a flower: from freshly bloomed to wilted.
Fana Hues - “Icarus”
Fana Hues revisits an old favorite in the new version of her single, “Icarus.” With references to the Greek myth of the same name, Hues is surrounded by her muses and vibrant colors in a stunning music video. The track happily lulls the listener into a dreamscape with lyrics that look back on missed red flags.
Awich - “Bad Bad”
Awich (short for Asia Wish Child) pushes conventions and expectations for women in the hip-hop world with each of her projects, and her second release of 2020, Partition, is no exception. The second single from the EP, “Bad Bad” is a flirtatious and lighthearted track that shows a more intimate side of Awich. She lets us in with a music video shot in her home island of Okinawa featuring moments with her beloved daughter and friends.
Babeheaven - “Craziest Things”
Nancy Andersen and Jamie Travis are the West Londoners who come together to form the dream-pop duo, Babeheaven. On “Craziest Things,” Andersen’s gentle vocals and a psychedelic music video lead the listener through feelings of restlessness and cluttered mind. It’s the third single from their upcoming album, In My Arms, set to release on November 20th.
Andrea Chahayed - “The Words”
Newcomer Andrea Chahayed has just begun releasing music in 2020 and has two singles to her name. Compiled from a lifetime of loving music, Chahayed has a diverse set of influences, including Imogen Heap, Alicia Keys, and Nine Inch Nails. “The Words” is a therapeutic and heartfelt introduction to the singer and a tease of her upcoming projects.
Morgan Reese - “october snow”
Morgan Reese is a bedroom pop artist through and through, with each of her songs crafted in the comfort of her own dorm. A move to San Francisco became the new backdrop for inspiration and has served her well in her first two singles. She uses her sweet, youthful voice to sing about the frustrations of a hot-and-cold relationship in “october snow.”
