MUST LISTEN 034

Every week, we’ll be bringing you Must Listen: a series that's a compilation of rising artists along with songs that must be added to your everyday playlist. This week’s playlist consists of emerging acts like Sal Dulu, 700 Feel, theMIND, Dry Cleaning, Katy Kirby, and more. Turn up, tune in, and tune out.

Sal Dulu - B (feat. Koncept Jack$on)

Dublin-based producer, Sal Dulu, plays with texture on “B,” his new track featuring nimble verses from Richmond, VA artist, Koncept Jack$on. Calling to mind the experimental, jazz-influenced, lo-fi stylings of producers like DJ Harrison or Swarvy, “B” is an easy listen, a swirling, gorgeous creation. “B” is the newest single to be shared from Sal Dulu’s forthcoming album, Xompulse (out Feb 19th on Duluoz Records), which will also include contributions from Fly Anakin, staHHr and more.

ShitKid - stubborn signs

ShitKid, aka Sweden-based artist Åsa Söderqvist, makes minimalist music somewhere between garage rock and pop. On “stubborn signs,” Söderqvist’s deadpan delivery and coy lyrics shine, her voice playfully meandering off beat at times but never drifting too far from the track’s steady, lo-fi bass groove.

theMIND - Gemini Sh*t (feat. Krystal)

“Gemini Sh*t” from alt-R&B and hip-hop artist, theMIND is a soulful, rich ballad bolstered by Krystal Metcalfe’s hushed vocals; a striking moment on the Chicago-via-Philly’s artist’s recently released album Don’t Let It Get To Your Head.

TATYANA - Back In My Head

TATYANA’s “Back In My Head” sounds like a journal entry backed by a ‘90s-inspired club beat. The classically-trained harp player, signed to Sinderlyn (HOMESHAKE’s label), is inspired heavily by London’s underground rave scene. Her unusual and endearing range of influences prove to be an irresistible combination.

Katy Kirby - Traffic

Katy Kirby is a breath of fresh air. The Texas-raised artist’s melodic, infectious folk is cut by cheeky lyrics - “nobody has it better than you” - and driving guitar riffs. “Traffic” comes with the announcement of Kirby’s new album Cool Dry Place, coming out February 19th, 2021 on Austin-based label, Keeled Scales.

Dry Cleaning - Scratchcard Lanyard

Moody, dry, danceable - it’s hard to not be immediately absorbed into Dry Cleaning’s surreal world. “Scatchard Lanyard” is the first single to be released since the South London post-punk 4piece signed with 4AD. Bandleader Florence Shaw’s detached, disaffected delivery of jumbled poetry is a perfect pairing for the track’s angular guitar riffs and brilliantly eccentric video.

700 Feel - T1 Western

“T1 Western” shows off Sydney-based electronic duo 700 Feel’s seamless ability to move from airy, ambient soundscapes to intricate, upbeat bass lines and textures in the space of just four minutes and twenty-three seconds. Threading together elements of UK garage, hip-hop, dub, house, jazz, footwork and more, 700 Feel’s music is emotional, expansive, and a must-listen.

Jerome Farah - Vibrate

Having previously worked as a much sought-after songwriter and producer, Melbourne’s Jerome Farah is now stepping into the spotlight in 2020. “Vibrate” is Farah’s third striking solo single of the year, alternating between soulful vocals and his effortless flow, backed by an incredibly catchy beat.

Dezorn Douglas & Brandee Younger - The Creator Has A Master Plan (Pharoah Sanders & Leon Thomas Cover)

NYC-based bassist Dezorn Douglas and harpist Brandee Younger started a series of livestreams when the lockdowns first started earlier this year: Force Majeure: Brunch In The Crib With Brandee & Dezron, and are now releasing 11 of the tracks next month on the duo’s debut album. “The Creator Has A Master Plan,” a cover of the Pharoah Sanders & Leon Thomas classic, is a cathartic, gorgeous standout performance, capturing the intimate, tender context surrounding the home recording.
