MUST LISTEN 023
Every week, we’ll be bringing you Must Listen: a series that's a compilation of rising artists along with songs that must be added to your everyday playlist. This week’s playlist consists of emerging acts like Nova Twins, Lexie Liu, and Newspeak. Turn up, tune in, and tune out.
Nova Twins - “Taxi”
Vocalist/guitarist Amy Love and bassist Georgia South make up the duo Nova Twins. Their music is unmistakably rock with their own flair, which can be clearly seen in the music video for “Taxi.”
Lexie Liu - “Manta”
I’ve been obsessed with Lexie Liu’s album 无限意识 Meta Ego since I came across it last month. I love the dark and futuristic style that runs through the music video for “Manta” and the album as a whole, as well as the leisure with which she rhymes her Mandarin and English lyrics.
Newspeak - “Parachute Flare”
While the previous song marks the end of summer, this song gently draws in the beginning of autumn. Japan-based Newspeak’s latest single is “Parachute Flare”, The slow build to a roaring chorus is almost euphoric; it demands all your attention to listen and take in every moment all the song changes pace.
AUDREY NUNA - “damn Right”
AUDREY NUNA’s “damn Right” is an all-out bop. The music video styling and aesthetic coupled with her natural flow comes together for an effortlessly cool result.
min.a - “Patient”
Korean-American artist min.a takes part in every aspect of the song making process, from production to lyric writing. It’s the self-made charm that complements min.a’s sweet vocals to create each of her unique tracks.
niña - “i got it all right here”
There’s nothing better than finding a gem in your Discover Weekly playlist. Singer Cat Matthews and producer/guitarist Christain Renard make up the duo niña—an homage to the country of Chile and to women in the arts. I love the self-assured lyrics, insisting on confidence and comfort with one’s self.
Kennie - “Northern Lights”
Kennie’s “Northern Lights” is a rumination about a distant love. It’s melancholy tone is nearly daydream inducing—a perfect accompaniment to a rainy day.
The Polar Boys - “Watch Out”
The next song is The Polar Boy’s “Watch Out”, featuring their self-directed music video. The video features an empty house drowned in red and blue light, creating a slight sinister vibe to contrast a cheerful track.
LIFE ELSEWHERE - “LIFE ELSEWHERE 2K2K”
LA-based LIFE ELSEWHERE have debuted with “LIFE ELSEWHERE 2K2K”. The duo are a self-proclaimed mystery; the equally enigmatic single provides just a tease at future releases.
