MUST LISTEN 022
Every week, we’ll be bringing you Must Listen: a series that's a compilation of rising artists along with songs that must be added to your everyday playlist. This week’s playlist consists of emerging acts like Mree, Baird, Asuel, and many more! Turn up, tune in, and tune out.
Mree - “Into The Woods”
The Portland-based experimental folk singer has always had a knack for creating ethereal dreamscapes through her sounds and visuals. Drawing from influences including Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens, and Imogen Heap, Mree establishes her tonality through her airy and angelic voice, intricate harmonies, and gentle sonic textures. She approaches her self-produced EP Bloom with an abundantly ambient sound, accompanying “Into The Woods” with an equally lush and mesmerizing visual.
Baird - “Chasing Deer”
Baird’s newest track “Chasing Deer” is a fun-loving tune sure to get you on your feet. The first single off his upcoming project BIRDSONGS, VOL. 2 is full of guitar licks, indulgent bass, and lively reverb-soaked vocals. Releasing via EQT Recordings, the Baltimore native has an exciting project in store, full of eclectic electronic and acoustic sounds inspired by his move to Mexico City.
Aseul - “Bye Bye Summer”
Aseul’s newest project Slow Dance is the ultimate synthpop dream. Written and self-produced by the South Korean artist herself, the album takes its listeners on a hazey 27-minute journey that almost feels like floating. She delivers “Bye Bye Summer” with a nostalgic 80s pop feel, meshing it with a taste of playful modernity.
Jean Dawson - “Clear Bones”
Jean Dawson has a sound all his own. Blending together elements of alternative, punk, and pop, the Los Angeles-based artist ponders life and death on his latest single “Clear Bones.” He prompts Mr. Reaper to play hide and seek, acknowledging his own mortality in a “playfully morbid” approach.
Akurei - “Charlotte”
Akurei’s self-produced track “Charlotte” is just one of three delicately written songs off his second EP HAIRDYE. Akurei strips down his sound by exploring his writing on the guitar first, describing the project as “a little more transparent and rawer.” The project is incredibly personal to the Australian producer and singer, and is home to some of his favorite songs he’s ever written.
Starchild & The New Romantic - “Tape (feat. Toro y Moi)”
Starchild & The New Romantic is the solo project of artist Bryndon Cook, merging elements of alternative R&B, electronic, and funk tonalities into his newest album Forever. Starchild explores his sweet and soulful sound with artist Toro y Moi on the two and a half minute track, “Tape”, as well as joins forces with other acts Nick Hakim, Rosehardt, and London O’Connor on the album.
JJ - “Charmed Life”
The songstress delivers a powerful message with the release of “Charmed Life,” the latest single off her new EP Charmed. JJ’s assertive harmonies and emboldened lyrics are magnetic, deciding to leave what no longer serves her and finding protection and salvation in her future.
Raj Mahal - “Glimpse (feat. Danté Knows)”
Off his forthcoming RAW DAWG EP, “Glimpse” is the leading single by Australian-based rapper Raj Mahal featuring New York’s Danté Knows. His hard-hitting delivery and relentless energy on the track gives his listeners insight into what we can expect from the new project, and having opened for acts like Wiley, YG, and Smokepurpp, Raj Mahal is indisputably a star in the making.
Sun June - “Singing”
Self-proclaimed as “regret pop” music, the Austin-based band knows how to deliver a bittersweet yet cathartic melody through their latest single “Singing.” The three minute track dwells on moments of conflict with their partner, “wishing they saw the world the same way” as described by lead singer Laura Colwell.
