TRACK BY TRACK: Jordan Dennis - HDMI2
Welcome to Track by Track, where we give artists the chance to take fans through their latest project one song at a time. Today, Jordan Dennis shares the details of his latest EP, HDMI2.
The Melbourne rapper shines on his latest project, seamlessly genre-bending as he adapts to elements like R&B, and showcases his expertise and versatility across nine songs; his confident flow and tender falsetto make him sound like a fully formed popstar, expertly bouncing between funk, R&B, and hip-hop. You can feel moments of powerful introspection as well as explore intimate moments of heartbreak and the brittleness of the male ego.
2AM
An ominous opening to my world, trying to emulate the lurky feel of being out at ungodly hours with the homies looking super sus but also not doing anything too illegal.
Shades of You
This was originally a heartbreak song but evolved to touching more on mental health and wanting to open up to people but instead pushing loved ones further away in order to isolate myself. No matter what I was doing with my friends to distract myself, I ultimately had to realize I couldn't keep maneuvering in this manner and come back to the people who will always be there for me.
Eatin'
This journey is purely a celebration of the people I hold the closest to my heart and acknowledging I could never be who I am without their love and support in my life.
Elon Must
Elon Must is a self-actualization song to me. It means to parallel the figure that Elon Musk, in terms of his endeavours, to further us as a species. In the same light, we strive to be at the forefront of evolving this hip-hop scene and culture through every level of its development. Additionally, I always want to be pushing the limits with what I create.
Hokus Pokus
Again taking the opportunity to celebrate the family I'm blessed to create with. It's a truly special feeling every time I get to create with the people I have so much love for. We're really making something out of nothing and that's magic.
Way Up
Taking another turn in the multiverse, diving into the duality of being an artist and the overall conflicting nature of just being human. As an artist I want people to know me for what I love to do but I don't want to be minimized to just that. I put my all into it but I still need to learn how to balance and separate myself from my artistry. Kinda a yin yang situation through my eyes.
New Kit
I was experiencing a lot of frustrations with my artistry and grinding hard like I know many others are. It would always irk me seeing people falling into clout culture and prospering so heavily off of being generic. It seemed like everybody was just doing the same thing trying to blow up quick, taking the fast route.
Everybody Loves Ray
I needed to experience something foreign and brand new but I found myself using that as an excuse to chase a love that didn't exist anymore. Along the way, tragedy struck the family of the friend I was staying with and we really helped each other through that time.
Mirrors
A somber but uplifting finish to the project. This track encompasses a new flare, new found confidence, and drive in knowing there's potentially a spot for me at the table with the greats if I choose to stay on this path. I'm coming home and to share the fruits of my labours whilst reintroducing the collaborative alter ego that is FLYBOY JACK.
