Q&A: SYCCO

Rising Australian singer-songwriter and producer, Sasha McLeod, also known as, Sycco {pron. 'psycho'}, shares her striking new single, “Dribble,” via WILDER (Future Classic and Tom Windish’s singles label).

As a follow-up to her previous single, “Nicotine,” "Dribble" marries vibrant indie-rock sensibilities and groove-tinged disco production with Sycco's smokey, heartfelt vocals. With a chorus that will surely get stuck in your head, Sycco pulls each of these styles together with a wistful ease. The single is accompanied by a music video directed by Madeline Randall and Summer King, filled with vibrant hues and aquatic imagery. Eerie and sometimes claustrophobic scenes are threaded together along with the upbeat melody. As the recipient of the triple j Unearthed Level Up Grant, the young singer is creating her own lane on the expanding music scene in Australia. We recently had the opportunity to chat with the rising musician regarding her latest release.

Please introduce yourself.

Hello! I’m Sycco, I’m 18 years old and from Brisbane, Australia. I have two blue eyes that are visible, I love audio files and the color purple is my fave at the moment.

Tell us about your latest single “Dribble” and inspiration behind the concept.

“Dribble” was inspired by someone talking in their sleep and I couldn’t make sense of what they were saying. When I was writing it I realized that I literally always feel like I’m not making any sense: it’s really about me dribbling.

Could you tell us the story behind your stage name?

I definitely can! It’s pronounced as ‘psych-o’ and it’s inspired by the word ‘psychedelic’ as I am a massive psych-rock fan.

Can you tell us about your future releases? Maybe we’ll get an album in the near future?

Hopefully there will be another song coming in red hot really quickly, and an EP I reckon!

What are you listening to right now?

Recently, I’ve been hitting Deaton Chris Anthony pretty hard, all the new Disclosure songs SLAP, and I’ve been in such a Clairo cycle for the past like four months. I’m feeling good, music is so good.
