Track By Track: Ruby Red

Bay Area bred and LA-based indie-pop duo Ruby Red composed of Daniel Laner & Fernando Fine have shared their new EP, Saboteur. The 6-track offering is a distillation of early adulthood given the circumstances—that is, a “coming-of-age” spent in isolation due to the pandemic. Alongside legends such as DallasK and Nineteen85, Ruby Red effortlessly paints a portrait of the youth in which they could no longer partake. The result sounds like a memory; a feverish, evocative, and admittedly romanticized smattering of colors that may not amount to an image that is “picture perfect”, but pleasant to look at nonetheless.

Today the duo take us track by track through their latest EP, Saboteur.

No Feeling Is Forever

The introduction to the project. We started this song in Danny’s parent’s backyard, after both moving back home––which I think was a very bittersweet moment for both of us. Taking comfort in familiarity, while also yearning for something new, both find their way into the song.

Eat Me

A very special song, as it is the only feature on the project. Clayjay is a good friend, a gentle lover, a sworn enemy––and our roommate. It was only a matter of time before he blessed us with a little bit of him.

A Planet For Us

A girl wrote a song about me when we were 15 and I forgot to write one back, until now! Almost everything has changed since then, but I still remember her fondly, and I wanted to write a song that proved it.

Overflow

A song about not-so-fond memories! Originally wrote this one to give to another artist, but we ended up holding onto it. I’ve never been good at letting things go––which I suppose is kinda what this song is about.

Too Late (To Call)

Our little baby hit. This song opened a lot of doors for us, even before we had put it out. Lucky to have been able to work with DallasK on this one––without him, it probably would’ve been condemned to Ableton as a demo, forever on a hard drive.

Doing It Right

Not sure how to begin describing this song. Production is all over the place, which has kind of unintentionally become our style. I don’t think there’s a song on this project that better depicts our emotional states when putting it all together than “Doing It Right”.
