Q+A: Cosmo’s Midnight
Twin ARIA-nominated duo, Cosmo’s Midnight return with their latest single and video, “Bang My Line” featuring Tkay Maidza. A silken and smooth slice of West-Coast funk, “Bang My Line” will transplant you directly to the hazy glitz of a palm-tree-lined LA. A slapping bass line calls for a subtle head nod, as a falsetto of ooh’s serenades the chorus. Tkay Maidza’s unmistakable flow coolly enters to effortlessly match the energy drummed up by the twins, atop a pastiche of live instrumentation and an organic peachy beat.
We had the opportunity to chat with the duo about their latest release
Welcome to LISTEN! Do you guys mind introducing yourselves?
Hello everyone we’re Cosmos Midnight, twin brothers from Sydney, Australia.
When it comes to making music as twins, what is your creative process like?
Usually one of us starts off with an idea and then we come together later to work out the bulk of the track. We do have different styles and skills though which is great for making sure our music stays fresh not only for our listeners but ourselves.
“Bang My Line” is absolutely insane! How did the collaboration with Tkay Maidza come about?
We’ve known Tkay for ages but I think the stars really aligned on this one. We've both arrived at these new chapters in music. We have a lot more direction and understanding of our own style and Tkay recently put out a series of tapes that really honed in on a new sound so the crossover felt quite effortless.
Is this the type of sound we can expect moving forward?
Of course! We do like to change it up with each record but underpin it with something we can still call our own sound, we’re excited to reveal more music from the project.
What is your process like when collaborating with other artists?
Well, the Tkay one for example took place over the internet which isn’t always ideal, but in this case, it worked perfectly. Tkay had a really strange idea with what she wanted to do on the track and we loved what she first sent through to us. So from the beginning it was a little too easy, normally there’s a lot more back and forth. In person we like to hang out a bunch before we right and arrive and some common ground musically or personally.
What’s something that's inspired you recently?
Film music has inspired me recently, I love how music in film has such symbiosis with the visuals. It almost feels like one could not exist without the other as they both inform feel and pacing in the film (some directors even score part of the film before shooting). In listening to and watching more films I’ve come to appreciate writing more evocative music, something that’s okay conducive to a mood or place.
If you could describe your sound to a new listener in three words, what would they be?
Funky, evocative, sonically-uplifting
What’s something fans can look forward to this year?
More music and lots of shows around the globe.
Who are you currently listening to?
Yune pinku, Midland, Daniel Caesar, Toro y Moi, Joyce Wrice just to name a few.
