MUST LISTEN 026
Every week, we’ll be bringing you Must Listen: a series that's a compilation of rising artists along with songs that must be added to your everyday playlist. This week’s playlist consists of emerging acts like Draag, Secret Attraction, and Róisin Marie. Turn up, tune in, and tune out.
Draag - Trauma Kit
San Fernando Valley natives Draag dropped a visual for their project Clara Luz back in January, but its smooth yet strange rhythmic qualities are still hauntingly chill and relevant now, given the popular musical themes in October (Halloween).
Róisin Marie - Better Days
With her airy delivery complimented by sparse percussion and synth work, Róisin Marie sings about a relationship from the past, reminiscing on the time in her life with this person and the highs and lows they faced together as she sings, "I wish I wish I knew those were better days and now they’re all gone."
Miel De Montagne - Relax le Plexus
French pop artist Miel de Montagne broke onto the scene as of recent with his 2018 low-key hit “Pourquoi Pas.” His new single, "Relax le Plexus" takes a similar approach to “Pourquoi Pas,”
a driving bass complimented by flanged guitars and a bridge fit for any warm-weather travel vlog.
Pink Siifu & Fly Anakin - Richard Pryor
With the support of his peer Earl Sweatshirt and his critically acclaimed solo album ensley, Pink Siifu made himself an underground star for the Jazz/experimental Hip-Hop scene. Fly Anakin and Siifu trade bars over this sparse sampled beat loop, talking subjects such as fashion, the passing of Nipsey Hustle, Onlyfans, and life as a Black American in 2020. This is a single for their upcoming album Fly Siifu out on November 13th.
Secret Attraction - Strawberry
Issue 004 featured an interview with Secret Attraction, giving us a taste of what was in store for the future, he mentioned a greater emphasis on storytelling and cohesive songs. That seems to be exactly what we got with “Strawberry.” A visual akin to those of the 80s, with the vintage car, dimly lit scenes, and a love story gone wrought. The visual perfectly compliments the track, which is off of his recent project of the same name.
Designer Jeans - m i l l i o n a r e
Portland based vaporwave artist Designer Jeans delivers an a e s t h e t i c vibe with his new track, “m i l l i o n a r e.” With an album on the way, this spacy slow funk groove serves as an appetizer for what I'm sure will be a very c h i l l project. All the classic vaporwave tropes are there, slowdowns, beat chops, reverb: this is talent that will for sure have an interesting future in vaporwave and beyond.
Baby Phace - Griest Freestyle
New Jersey native Baby Phace delivers a freestyle with a Wu-Tang Clan-like precision, clever lines such as, "Infidels got me moving like Fidel,” and a beat which is reminiscent of something off Enter The 36 Chambers. Filmed in Cincinnati, Ohio, the backdrops to the visual features expansive street art, dim store windows, and a pinkish-red sunset behind Phace as he raps to the camera.
Kevin Holliday - Want Me Too (Feat. Dach)
Kevin Holliday is a Brooklyn, New York-based indie-alternative/R&B artist whose musical inspirations and influences range from Prince to Pharrell Williams. With floating synths and a smooth drum loop, the Dach feature serves as the vocal icing on the cake for a beautiful hook.
