MUST LISTEN 039

Every week, we’ll be bringing you Must Listen: a series that's a compilation of rising artists along with songs that must be added to your everyday playlist. This week’s playlist consists of emerging acts like Hadji Gaviota, Leah Dou, and Cosima. Turn up, tune in, and tune out!

Hadji Gaviota - “GUIDO/MISS KARMA”

Hadji Gaviota envelopes us in a blue and red backdrop in the music video for his song, “GUIDO/MISS KARMA.” It’s a catchy tune that sets the tone for the Queens-based artist’s second full-length album to date, PURGATORY. The track transitions from an upbeat “GUIDO'' into a stripped-down “MISS KARMA,” displaying Gaviota’s range of style.

Leah Dou - “ORANGE”

Leah Dou touches on childhood nostalgia in the beautiful music video for her single, “ORANGE.” It’s but one of the great songs to grace Leah Dou’s latest album, GSG MIXTAPE. The Chinese artist effortlessly blends genres, making every song a fulfilling listening experience.

Cosima - “Philly”

Cosima’s new single “Philly” is wonderfully uplifting and intimate. The British singer takes her career into her own hands—she writes all her songs, directs a majority of her music videos, and releases music under her own record label. With the last full-length release being her South of London EP in 2016, “Philly” is a hint of what's to come.

Silica Gel - “Kyo181”

South Korean band Silica Gel reaches visuals of psychedelic proportions with their most recent release, “Kyo181.” The music video does not skimp on anything, from chic styling to stunning art direction. It’s a welcome companion to a dizzying and addictive tune.

Cherry Glazerr - “Rabbit Hole”

Cherry Glazerr has hit milestones as a band who found their rise through the 2010’s indie scene in L.A. and Orange County, but have been quiet for a while. Deviating slightly from the band’s established indie rock sound, their new song “Rabbit Hole” was inspired by electronic artists like DJ Koze and Yaeji. This single marches ahead of their first full album since 2019.

ASHWARYA - “COMIN@ME”

Starting a career during quarantine is no easy feat, but newcomer ASHWARYA has accomplished that and more. The Melbourne singer has three singles to date with the recent release of “COMIN@ME.” The change in pace throughout the song keeps the listener on their toes and gives us a look at ASHWARYA’s unique flair.

River Tiber - “Hypnotized”

Although “Hypnotized” was one of the only releases of 2020 for River Tiber, he’s returned without missing a beat. The Toronto artist displays a talent for multiple instruments on this track, including violin, cello, drums, and synth all played by him. Fans of Kaytranada and Daniel Caesar may already know River Tiber from his collaborations with them, but he’s a veteran in his own right as a soloist.

Stanford Lin - “Shellfish”

New York City artist Stanford Lin is just getting started. His first release “Shellfish” is a chill introduction to the singer, along with a visualizer that takes the name of the song literally. He’s already following up his debut, Inside Voice, with his second album, KAFKAESQUE, coming soon.

Thea - “A Little Time on Me”

Thea soothes with “A Little Time On Me” from her first album, Land of Nod. The storybook aesthetic defines her debut and drops the listener into a fantasy land. A self-proclaimed lullaby, the song is accompanied by the sweet melody of a music box.
