MUST LISTEN 115

Every week, we’ll be bringing you Must Listen: a series that's a compilation of rising artists along with songs that must be added to your everyday playlist. This week’s playlist consists of emerging acts like altopalo, thuy, and Nova Twins.

Described as “a song about some very very emotional games of hide and seek” between adult friendships, altopalo releases an emotional cornerstone from their upcoming album. As veterans of the New York underground scene, the quartet disintegrates the boundaries of genre; folding in elements of R&B, electronica, ambient, and jazz through their deconstructionist approach to guitar-driven music.

With deep respect for the fundamentals of music, happytree continues to define his style by focusing on lyricism, unique flows, and the never-ending hustle that’s essential to achieving greatness. His latest single, “Don’t Fight It” is a daring step forward into the world of House Rap. The track is described as an anthem for staying true to yourself without fighting yourself.

Coming out of her debut era, thuy unveils a new musical chapter with the release of “trust.” Having showcased her angelic vocals, skillful songwriting, and modern R&B stylings, thuy is carving out a space not only for herself within and beyond the community of self-made Asian-American artists that have recently emerged. She hopes to inspire confidence in others and be a voice for those who want to feel seen.

The 23-year-old rapper from London showcases his sharp-tongued and witty lyricism with “Jordan Year (At This Rate).” Asriel infuses his individuality alongside his influences from American and UK HipHop, anime, video games, and his West African background to create invigorating tracks like this.

Kai Bosch releases his third single, “Blood,” off of his debut EP, SLIPPING out next month. Kai describes the song as exploring “trauma and mental health through the lens of a relationship and how it can affect the people around you.” The 20-year-old singer is poignant, personal, and compelling, which makes us all the more eager to hear his upcoming releases.

Influenced by the UK and European dance scene, Sam Gellaitry evokes his worldview through his colorful and vivid production. He constantly puts listeners on a synesthesia-fueled journey through impressive musical tones and soundscapes. The young producer has picked up nods from his fellow peers in the electronic scene and creates anticipation wherever he goes.

SUMIN is a multifaceted artist that is not only a captivating vocalist, but a prolific producer, sound designer, and creative director. By drawing influences from hip-hop, electronic, and Korean music, SUMIN has been establishing a style that can be described as neo-K-pop. Not confined to the mainstream or underground, SUMIN has been a pioneering force in shifting the paradigm of K-pop.

Taken from the sophomore album, Supernova, “Choose Your Fighter” perfectly showcases their willingness to go the extra mile with their signature heavy riffs and fierce vocals. The track captures the tension and releases that we’ve all been through lately while imagining what’s to come. Nova Twins are trailblazers, leading a game all on their own, even if there are no rules.
